-Toxicology in Chemical Reactions-

Open ended question

If you were to design a science experiment to test the effectiveness of different natural and synthetic substances in neutralizing the harmful effects of common toxins, which substances would you choose and why? How might you go about measuring the effectiveness of each substance, and what factors would you need to consider to ensure the experiment is fair and accurate?

Outline

In this section, students will learn about chemical dosage and formula of reactions:

Basic chemical information

  1. identifying the reactant and product

  2. signs of chemical reaction

  3. balancing chemcial equations

  4. thermochemistry anaylsis on endothermic and exothermic reactions

  5. percent yield= 100% x absolute value (actual yield / predicted yield)

4 Basic Toxicology Dose Calculations

  • LD50

  • LC50

  • ED50

  • TD50

  • Therapeutic index

Entry Pathways

  • oral

  • injection

  • inhalers

  • eyes

  • skin

  • *environment

*NOTE FOR INSTRUCTORS:

keep the lessons in this section fun and simple, have the student think about the different pathways of exposure and how the body can defense towards foreign substances.

Lab Ideas

  • Chemical synthesis and calculate percent yield from ICE table.

    • can be any chemical reaction- percent yield is the most important idea
